SAT 26th and SUN 27th JUNE HURSTPIERPOINT COLTS FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT at Court Bushes playing fields – behind Willow Way, Hurstpierpoint. Raphael Falconry will present a variety of stunning flights from their collection of hawks, owls and falcons. As they swoop and hover, pounce and pitch, discover how each bird is uniquely designed for flight. Learn all about the role of falconers in Norman times and why they had to keep their bird’s feathers in top condition.

Dressed in field fashion of the day, Raphael Falconry will explain the Victorian revival of the country sport of falconry. Watch as they recreate this traditional art in all-action style with flights from a variety of hawks, owls and falcons.

Medieval falconers will reveal the folk history of a variety of birds of prey and demonstrate the abilities of these awesome creatures. Learn about the history of falconry and the folklore of birds and watch the spirited old hag, powerful cook bird, lightening fast tiercel and impish kestrel in dramatic flight.

Saturday 14th August at Observatory Science Centre, Herstmonceaux- Perseids Shooting Star Evening. Join us for a cheese and wine evening before trying to spot some meteors. The Perseids meteor shower occurs as Earth passes through the outskirts of a cloud of debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle. The dust and bits of rock left behind burn up if they enter the earth’s atmosphere, leaving a bright stream. These burning streams are also known as shooting stars. The evening aims to be both informal and informative. It includes a guest speaker and an opportunity to look though The Centre’s historic telescopes (weather permitting). If the weather is unsuitable on themed evenings, the talk will go ahead regardless and a comprehensive tour of the telescopes will replace viewing. Alongside the staff are members of a local astronomical society who are also there to help answer any questions you may have. Numbers are limited to 80 people, so book early to secure your place. Time: 7pm – 11pm. Cost: £17.50 per person

Make your own telescope and comet as well as designing and building your own spacecraft to land safely on Mars. 12th September at Newhaven Fort. A series of 70th anniversary commemorative special events will also take place including a programme of lectures, 1940’s themed live jazz evenings, a Battle of Britain Ball and the highlight of our annual calendar, Battle of Britain Day.
Saturday September 18th. A spectacular children’s parade lead by samba band Maracatu Cruzeiro do Sul will be one of the highlights of the opening day of the sixth Hurstpierpoint Festival in September. The parade will mark the start of the Family Fun Day on – the rest of which will include displays of break dancing and a bouncy football tournament on St Lawrence School field in Trinity Road. There will be other entertainment in the High Street on the from a street entertainers and buskers. Children taking part in the parade will be able to make their own costumes the previous weekend at a special workshop.
